“Hello friends and welcome to our home. I’m Robert Marvin and I’m here with my wife Elizabeth to join you as you tour our house.”

“We were married in 1889 and lived at the Sherman House in Jamestown, but after a few years we decided to build a home of our own. We worked with the architect Ernest Dietrich and after a few years of design, revisions and construction, we moved in, in 1898. So we have been living here now for two years. We were joined by my niece Maud Marvin.”

“We enjoyed the whole process of designing and building, and poured over every detail. We paid particular attention to the fireplaces, making sure they were suitable for each room. This one for example, has a lovely wood called figured birch.”

“The fireplaces are all gas fired. They were selected from catalogs that Mister Dietrich brought from his office in New York City. The mantles were fabricated elsewhere, shipped here by rail, installed here, and finished by our painting contractor.”

“Our next room is the library.”
